Karty ve hře Mindbug představují podivné bytosti, které mají jedinečné a mocné schopnosti, jako je například Compost Dragon, Snail Hydra nebo Kangasaurus Rex. Každý hráč začíná hru s deseti kartami nestvůr (pět v ruce a pět na dobírací hromádce) a snaží se je použít tak, aby snížil soupeřův počet životů na nulu. Každý hráč navíc obdrží dvě karty Mindbugů, které lze při zahrání použít k ovládnutí mysli soupeřovy bytosti. Tento inovativní mechanismus „Mindbug“ je jádrem hry a vede k jedinečnému rozhodovacímu procesu, díky němuž se Mindbug naprosto liší od ostatních karetních her.

Zahrání karty nevyžaduje ve hře Mindbug žádné zdroje. Díky tomu hra nemá žádnou přípravnou fázi (jako je sběr zdrojů) a nevyžaduje slabé karty. Protože se také netvoří žádný balíček, můžete začít hrát hned s jedním balíčkem. Neexistuje ani žádná neférová výhoda, protože hráči si dobírají karty ze stejného balíčku a vždy mají možnost ovládnout myšlenkami nejsilnější karty soupeře. Nakonec vše záleží na vašich vlastních rozhodnutích, díky čemuž je hra nesmírně spravedlivá a zároveň soutěživá.
