Players take turns in the game and compete to be the first to earn four trophies for success in one of the eight competitive categories. On their turn, players can move, search, or create. These actions allow them to increase their friendship, earn pies, improve actions, fulfill adventures, learn spells, and deliver sapphires and apples to the Stälestand Castle. And if they have enough courage, they may succeed in a pie fight. Some mechanisms in the game Champions of the Apple Kingdom were inspired by the highly successful game Scythe by Jamey Stegmaier.

The airship Kai arrives in the Apple Kingdom to help the harvesters in the harvest competition.
