Root je desková hra plná dobrodružství a boje, kdy se hráči snaží získat kontrolu nad lesní říší. Hanebná Markýza z Kocourova obsadila velké území hvozdu a vykořisťuje jeho bohatství. Za její vlády se proto mnoho lesních tvorů spojilo, aby vzdorovalo nadvládě koček.
Aliance může požádat o pomoc tajemného Tuláka, který se dovede pohybovat i po těch nejnebezpečnějších stezkách. Avšak, ač tento poutník sympatizuje s nadějemi a sny aliance lesních tvorů, je také dost starý na to, aby pamatoval velké dravce, kteří tu kdysi vládli. Pyšná a rozhádaná dynastie dravců vybírá nového velitele a věří, že je povede k získání jejich pradávných nároků.
