Pergamon is a tactical collecting game with a theme based on excavating archaeological finds and managing their exhibition.

The story takes place in 1878, when the first excavations in present-day Turkey uncover the remains of ancient Pergamon. Rare discoveries soon make their way abroad to public exhibitions before awaiting audiences, garnering considerable honor and fame.

Players attempt to obtain federal research grants to cover the costs of excavations through a bidding mechanism. Those who are more modest and less demanding can travel to excavations before their competitors, following the rule that the early bird gets the worm. Only fragments will remain for later expeditions. The treasures found are placed in valuable exhibitions, earning the discoverers fame and recognition.

The player who collects the most fame after 12 rounds wins the game.

The combination of raising funds and racing for the best excavation sites makes Pergamon a variable game with easily accessible rules. Players are forced to make decisions based on the money they can earn and the order in which they choose the places to dig.
