During the reign of Emperor Yao, the inhabitants of ancient China were constantly plagued by deadly floods along the Yellow River. Yao wanted to put an end to the destruction, so he chose Gun, one of his officials, to come up with a plan. After nine years of unsuccessful attempts using dams and dikes, Gun's job ended doubtfully. After his departure, Yu inherited his father's work. Learning from Gun's failures, Yu embarked on the construction of a series of canals to divert the rapidly rising river into surrounding fields and smaller waterways.

Legacy of Yu is a non-linear campaign game that is fully resettable for individuals only, where you will embody the role of the legendary hero of the Xia dynasty, Yu the Great. Your task will be to build canals before the approaching flood and at the same time defend your growing village from neighboring barbarian tribes. With each game, more stories and new gameplay elements will be added. The campaign is equipped with a self-balancing system that adapts to how well you are doing. The campaign ends once you win or lose seven games.
