Illiterati are a secret evil organization that has taken over the world. Your task as a member of the League of Librarians is to save the books of the world - one word at a time.

Illiterati is a real-time cooperative word game in which players work together to create words and bind books. Each player starts the game with five letter tiles and a red burned book that states the condition the player must meet to restore the book, for example, using 8+ tiles with at least 3 green symbols to create words that are all animals. A library of three random tiles is placed in the center of the table. The game is played in three-minute rounds, and before each round, each player draws seven letter tiles from the drawstring bag.

Once the countdown begins, players can talk to each other and the library, exchanging letters as they wish and trying to achieve their goal. When time runs out, if the library contains too many letters - and this limit depends on the difficulty level - a burning event is triggered. Turn all these letters face down, then remove one from the game and discard the excess letters into the discard bag. If you burn too many letters, you lose the game. If you haven't burned any letters and have met your goal, turn the red book face down and draw a blue waterlogged book, setting a new goal for yourself.

At the end of the round, draw a card of an illiterate villain and resolve its effect. If you have drawn this villain before - and the deck contains five copies of five villains - then all previous effects of this villain will also be resolved by a chain attack from the newest to the oldest. Villain attacks often remove letters from words, meaning that during the next round, you will have to create new words from what you have left to avoid burning another letter.

Once all players have completed two books - or three or four depending on the difficulty level - draw one more book, the Final Chapter, with all players having to complete this task in the same round, for example, using more than 12 tiles to create words in which all your vowels are the same color. If all players complete this task in one round, you win; if no one succeeds, another villain attacks, then draw new tiles and start another round. At the beginning of the round, you can discard and redraw up to seven tiles, but in this round, you must draw a second illiterate villain card - and if the villain deck runs out, you lose.
