The game Gùgōng is based on the corrupt customs of 16th century China. You take the role of powerful Chinese families who try to gain influence and power by "exchanging gifts" with officials. The gift card you offer must be worth more than the one you take back. This forces you to make strategic decisions about which action you want to take that turn and at what cost. You will travel in China, sail the Grand Canal, buy rare jades, participate in the building of the Great Wall, and gain advantages through the proceeds you push through. You'll influence the game through intrigue, until eventually you get an audience with the Emperor himself. If only one player succeeds, he wins. If multiple players, then the one with more points wins.

Product detailed description

In 1570, Emperor Lung-ching of the Ming Dynasty took over the government of China. However, he takes over a country in decline after years of mismanagement and rampant corruption. He takes up residence in the Forbidden City, which has been the seat of a number of rulers of his dynasty. This huge complex (built between 1406 and 1420) consists of 980 buildings and covers 72 hectares. The Great Wall is also being rebuilt and fortified at this time, as China is plagued by constant attacks from the Mongols. What remains of this monumental structure is mainly due to the Ming dynasty.

Even then, China was already known for its complex bureaucracy, which led to pervasive corruption. Although the punishments for corruption were very severe, the top officials of the Forbidden City accepted expensive gifts in return for which they returned almost worthless objects. In this way, they were ostensibly upholding the prohibition against corruption and avoiding punishment.

The game of Gùgōng is based on these corrupt customs. You take the role of powerful Chinese families who try to gain influence and power through this "gift exchange" with officials. The gift card you offer must be worth more than the one you take back. This forces you to make strategic decisions about which action you want to take that turn and at what cost. You will travel in China, sail the Grand Canal, buy rare jades, participate in the building of the Great Wall, and gain benefits from the edicts you enforce. You'll influence the game through intrigue, and eventually you'll gain an audience with the Emperor himself. If only one player succeeds, he wins. If multiple players, then the one with more points wins.
