Every midnight, the Ancient One draws closer and closer to our world. And if it awakens, everything we know will be cast into a dark abyss from which there is no return. As players search for powerful artifacts, they explore supernatural phenomena in various corners of the museum. This is depicted on adventure cards. At the beginning of the game, you first choose a specific Ancient One to face. Then you lay out 6 out of 48 possible adventure cards in the middle of the table. A large number of different combinations guarantee that investigators very rarely encounter the same group of mysteries.
When fulfilling an adventure card, the player must assign the symbols rolled on the dice to all the targets on the adventure card. The player on their turn first rolls their entire supply of special six-sided dice. Based on the symbols rolled, they decide which adventure target to fulfill first. Then they can move on to the next adventure target. But be careful. Dice used to fulfill one target cannot be rolled again when fulfilling other targets on the same adventure card. Only clever use of all possibilities will allow you to withstand the challenging challenges from the depths of the museum.
Each of the sixteen unique investigators has different abilities and resources to help you in your investigation. Many investigators focus on specific ways to fulfill goals and allow the player to change the symbol rolled on the die or exchange one symbol for another. Some gather more resources, others can heal vitality or restore sanity. Whether investigators excel in anything, they must always cooperate to avert the destruction threatening our world. Throughout the game, investigators acquire useful items and spells that bring them extra dice when fulfilling adventure goals. It is absolutely crucial to cleverly combine all the abilities of detectives, items, and spells. Only then can luck occasionally turn in your favor when rolling the dice.
There is no time to spare! The clock relentlessly measures the time available to investigators. If investigators fail to seal the gates in time and the Ancient One awakens definitively, the final desperate battle ensues, where investigators must directly confront this dreadful creature.
