District 9: The Board Game is a competitive game for 2-4 players that allows players to experience the classic sci-fi film from a completely new perspective. Players take on the role of a faction from the world of District 9 and compete for control of the district and its technological resources through interaction with the local population, iconic characters, and each other.

The game takes place over three days, during which events from the film unfold. Players start by laying out various district tiles to create a dynamic game board. The differently shaped district tiles allow the game board to be unique with each play. Players then place their starting tile on the edge of the district, simulating the place where they strategically decided to enter. By issuing commands to move their units on the game board and using cards to enhance their abilities, players lead their faction in an effort to save as much alien technology as possible.

As the conflict escalates, unrest in District 9 intensifies. Wikus' actions during the eviction of the prawns and the subsequent hunt for humans raise the stakes to a climactic finale: when Wikus dons the prawn mech suit to heroically resist. The player who manages the chaos of battle and saves the most alien technology is declared the winner.
